Technical Briefs

Statement of recognition for Technical Briefs:

In collaboration with COMBO+, and valuable input from numerous IMEC members, we prepared and launched ten short explainers covering key topics on the mitigation hierarchy and no net loss/ net gain of biodiversity. The briefs are intended for different technical audiences and are currently available in English and French. We hope these will be useful to you in your work. Many thanks indeed go to the many IMEC members who contributed by reviewing and providing feedback on earlier iterations of these documents.

The Mitigation Hierarchy cover
TB01. The Mitigation Hierarchy

What is the mitigation hierarchy and why do we need it?

Aligning Mitigation Outcomes cover
TB02. Aligning Mitigation Outcomes with Biodiversity Goals and Targets

How can net outcome approaches contribute to broader biodiversity targets?

Impact Assessment cover
TB03. Impact Assessment and the Mitigation Hierarchy

What role does impact assessment play in ensuring that the mitigation hierarchy is applied to development proposals?

Strategic Planning cover
TB04. Strategic Planning for the Mitigation Hierarchy

How can the mitigation hierarchy be applied at different scales to improve outcomes?

Avoid and Minimise cover
TB05. Steps 1 and 2 in the Mitigation Hierarchy: Avoid and Minimise Impacts

Why and how to prioritise avoidance and minimisation of impacts on biodiversity and people.

Restore and Offset cover
TB06. Steps 3 and 4 in the Mitigation Hierarchy: Restore and Offset

Best practice in restoration and offsetting, and limits to what they can achieve.

Considering People cover
TB07. Considering People as well as Biodiversity

When, why, and how should affected people be considered when applying the mitigation hierarchy?

Metrics for Quantifying Biodiversity cover
TB08. Metrics for Quantifying Biodiversity

How should biodiversity components be measured in the context of project development?

Measuring Loss and Gain cover
TB09. Measuring Loss and Gain: Additionality

How to ensure that offsets deliver conservation benefits above and beyond what would happen without them.

Ensuring Lasting Outcomes cover
TB10. Ensuring Lasting Outcomes from Mitigation

What is needed to ensure mitigation measures are successful over the long term?
